Conn Kavanaugh Associates Julie Martin and Emily Slaman featured by KIND in Pro Bono Attorney Spotlight

In August, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) featured two Conn Kavanaugh attorneys for their Pro Bono Attorney Spotlight. The worthy attorneys are Emily Slaman and Julie Martin. Their dedicated and collaborative work on behalf of a KIND client changed his life dramatically for the better. Here’s why these able attorneys took on a Pro Bono case and what they learned from doing so.

Why did you take a KIND case?

We are grateful to be working at a firm, Conn Kavanaugh Rosenthal Peisch & Ford, LLP, that encourages attorneys to take on pro bono cases because they give us experience, the ability to grow as attorneys, and to do good in the community. Management at the firm knows that doing pro bono work can help to make the legal profession fulfilling–and they want us to love what we do. Julie was excited to have the chance to take on a KIND case in particular because her experience working in an immigration legal clinic during law school, and her time working at an immigrant-serving nonprofit prior to law school, gave her an appreciation for how rewarding it is to work on this type of case. Emily liked the opportunity to get on-your-feet courtroom experience, while making a huge difference in someone’s life.

What have you learned from this experience or from your client(s)?

Both Julie and Emily learned just how brave and committed family members can be in support of one another, even when faced with serious obstacles.

What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the U.S. immigration system?

Julie has been struck by the shifting and uncertain nature of requirements and guidance in this area of the law. Emily has been surprised by the little intricacies which can differ from state to state, even regarding a federal regulation.

What would you tell other attorneys to encourage them to take a KIND case?

This will be some of the most meaningful and fulfilling work you do, because it can build a positive foundation for the rest of a child’s life. So much can flow just from this one representation – safety, security, stability, health, education, and other opportunities.

Do you have any advice for a new attorney taking their first pro bono case?

Even if this is a new area of law for you, you have the skills necessary to represent your clients, particularly with guidance from your KIND mentor.  Your legal skills will translate – and will be a true asset to your client. Also, there are plenty of people (clerks, Judges, Magistrates) who are supportive of the work you are doing on a KIND matter, and willing to help along the way. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to those more experienced than you are in immigration practice!
